We have been giving you regular updates on the ongoing ‘part-privatization’ process of Indian Railways.

The Ministry of Railways (MoR) had informed that a total of 151 trains will be run by private companies.

Indian Railways had received a total of 120 applicants for the 1st round of running private players trains, called the Request for Qualification (RFQ), of which 102 such applications have been shortlisted for the 2nd stage of the whole process.

12 Independent Railways Clusters

To give you a quick briefing, the Indian Railways had identified 12 independent clusters having 150 origin-destination routes.

On this, private players will operate 151 passenger trains. The Railway Ministry made a total investment of about Rs 30000 crore.

These 12 independent clusters open to private players include:

  • Bangalore
  • Chandigarh
  • Chennai
  • Delhi 1
  • Delhi 2
  • Howrah
  • Jaipur
  • Mumbai 1
  • Mumbai2
  • Patna
  • Prayagraj
  • Secunderabad

2nd Stage of Shortlisting Start for Private Players

On July 1, 2020, the Ministry of Railways announced the 1st stage of shortlisting for private players, called the Request for Qualification (RFQ), opened from October 7, 2020. 

16 firms submitting 120 applications, participated in this stage.

Of these, 102 applications have been shortlisted for the 2nd round of running private trains, called the Request for Proposal (RFP).

Results for the 2nd competitive stage will be declared by the Indian Railways soon.
