80% Of All Mobile Phones Sold Are Make in India!

India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) has released interesting numbers regarding the manufacturing of mobile phones and electronic gadgets in India.

It is still hard to believe, but 80% of all mobile phones sold in India are now Make in India.

Over 225 million handsets were assembled and/or manufactured in India during 2017-18. As per ICEA, this is 80% of the overall market share. This means that only 20% of the mobile phones sold in India are imported!

As per ICEA, in 2018-19, a total of Rs 1.65 lakh crore worth of Make in India handsets will be sold in India, and this will be roughly 290 million handsets, or approximately 30% growth.

Make In India = Money Saved!

Due to initiatives of Make in India in the last 3-4 years, India has collectively saved Rs 3 lakh crore which would be otherwise spent on importing the handsets and paying various taxes.

ICEA has clearly stated that Make in India and Digital India are “acting as gateways to spur the growth of India’s tech and telecom industry”.

This year alone, 130 million Make in India handsets have been sold, whose collective worth is Rs 75,000 crore.

And, local employment too is increasing. Due to Make in India campaign, 120 manufacturing hubs have been created, which collectively generated 4.5 lakh jobs.

Jio Phone Will Further Boost Make in India?

As per ICEA chairman & national president, Pankaj Mohindroo, Jio Phone’s manufacturing and assembling will be Make in India very soon, which will further boost local manufacturing and dependency on imported mobiles phones will decrease.

Soon, the trend will spread to other electronic gadgets as well.

As per ICEA’s predictions, imported mobile phones will soon account for mere 5-7% of overall mobiles sold, which amounts to less than Rs 1000 crore a month.
