Desperation For Jobs: Engineers, Post-Grads Ready To Work As Helpers

Starting mid-2018, Indian Railways started recruitment activity for filling up jobs under Level 1 or Group D category. Total of 62,907 vacancies were advertised via various employment letters and newspapers. Now, as examinations are over, and medical tests are being carried out for the selected applicants, Indian Railways has revealed some shocking facts: 82 lakh engineers and post-graduates have applied for the jobs under Group D or Level 1.

Educational Qualification Required For Group D Jobs?

Group D or Level 1 is the lowest category of employment under Indian Railways. Job titles under Group D are: helpers (also called Khalasi), gateman, helper in offices and sheds, track-men or gang-men and points-men whose task is to maintain tracks.

The only qualification required for these jobs are class 10th pass and/or and/certificate from the National Council on Vocational Training or Industrial Training Institutes, or have a National Apprenticeship Certificate.

As you can clearly see, there is a massive mismatch between qualifications and the job: A post-graduate in engineering or commerce will now become helpers and gatemen.

2 Crore Applicants For 60,000 Jobs In Indian Railways

Overall, more than 2 crore applications were received by Indian Railways for filling up 62,909 jobs under Group D.

Out of these, 1,88,721 were called for physical efficiency test, and out of them, 75,485 were selected candidates, whose documentation and medical tests are being conducted.

Here is the breakdown of the 2 crore applicants:

  • 82 Lakh Engineers and Post-Graduates
  • 4,19,137 Engineering graduates with BTech degree
  • 40,751 post-graduates in engineering or MTech
  • 19.1 lakh Arts graduates
  • 3.83 lakh postgraduates in arts
  • 9.57 lakh Science graduates
  • 1,27,018 postgraduates in science.
  • 16,952,957 applicants who have only passed Class 10th exam

Our Opinion

There is no way we are demeaning or insulting the jobs of helpers and gatesmen, linesmen under Group D or Level 1 in Indian Railways.

Every job is important, and every person who does a job, any job infact, contributes to society and the country.

However, a BTech or MTech degree holder can do much more for the society, compared to doing a job where anyone with class 10 certificate can apply.

The question here is about the prevalent jobs scenario and the level of education.
