Xiaomi Is The Biggest Smartphone Brand in India; OPPO Beats Vivo To Reach #3 – IDC Report

The first quarter results of mobile phone sales in India is out with IDC’ Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report.

As expected, there are some major surprises here!

But to start on a positive note, the first quarter of 2018 witnessed strongest ever smartphones and feature phone sales in India, ever.

A total of 30 million units of mobile phones was sold between January and March 2018, and this has set the table for an exciting year for the tech industry.

Last year, a total of 124 million units of mobiles were sold, a record which is expected to be broken in 2018.

Xiaomi Vs Samsung: The Battle Warms Up!

Xiaomi has emerged as the biggest smartphone brand in India, as they clocked 30.3 million sales in the first 90 days of 2018.

This way, they have successfully beaten Samsung, which was the #1 smartphone brand last year. But, Samsung’s downward trend had started in the last quarter of 2017, which has continued to 2018.

With 25.1% market share, Samsung is at #2 position in India.

OPPO’s Sharp Rise!

However, the brand to look out for is OPPO, from the stable of BBK Electronics in China which also sells Vivo and OnePlus brands.

Compared to last quarter, OPPO saw a stunning increase in sales, which propelled them to beat Vivo, and claim #3 position in the overall ranking.

OPPO’s latest F7, which was launched last month, has been attributed as a major factor for this rise in their market share.

Last year, OPPO reported a massive 750% jump in sales, and it seems that the trend shall continue for some time.

With 7.4% market share, OPPO is at #3 position.

Vivo is at #4 position with 6.7% market share.

The wild card entry of smartphone ranking is Transsion, which made their entry in the top 5 ranking, beating the world beater Apple!

Their 4 smartphone brands: iTel, Tecno, Infinix and Spice recorded 3X increase in sales last year, which made them eligible to be ranked in the top 5 position. They are right now commanding 4.6% market share in India.

Other brands constituted 25.9% share.

Reliance Jio: #1 Feature Phone Brand!

The rise and popularity of Jio Phone is now unstoppable.

We have already reported that Jio Phone is right now #1 feature phone brand in India as they have beaten Samsung. And the IDC report once again proves this.

As per IDC’s latest report, Jio Phone has captured 38.4% market share in India, compared to Samsung’s 10.4%.

Transsion has made a mark in feature phone market as well, as they managed to grab 7.9% share.

Lava and Micromax are the only Indian brands in the list of top 5 feature phone brands in India, with 6% and 4.7% market share respectively.
