The extra fee comes into effect if passengers want to carry goods weighing more than the standard fixed by the railway.

The Ministry of Railways wrote on Twitter in Hindi, translated as, “Do not carry more luggage during train travel. If so, then definitely book it in a luggage van. If the luggage is more, then the fun of the journey will be halved!” (sic)

Railways have fixed a limit on luggage according to each coach, such that heavy goods ranging from 40 kg to 70 kg can be kept in the train compartment.

Sanctioned limits

As per the new rules, a passenger travelling in a sleeper class can carry luggage up to 40 kg for free.

A passenger travelling in AC two tier is allowed to carry luggage weighing up to 50 kg, maximum 70 kg in first class AC.

This limit can also be increased by up to 80 kg by paying extra.

If a passenger is found carrying more weight than the stipulated standard, then he/she will be charged an additional fee.

The same passenger can book a luggage van by paying Rs 109.

Banned items

Passengers cannot carry banned items like any kind of flammable chemical, acid, crackers, ghee, leather, oil, grease.

If the rule is found to have been broken, action can be taken against them under Section 164 of the Railway Act.

In other news the Railways has clarified that there has been no change in the rule concerning booking of tickets for children travelling by train.

No change in free ride for kids

False reports stated that those in the age group of one to four years are now being charged adult fares.

A circular dated March 6, 2020 of the Ministry of Railways states that children under five years of age shall travel for free.

However a separate berth or seat (in chair car) will not be provided.

Passengers can book separate berths/seats for their children who are below the age of 5 years for which full adult fare will be charged.

Age-wise fares

  • Age 0-4 years: Free of cost for kids if you select Infant berth/ Infant with no berth depending on the train. Else pay the full charge if berth is taken
  • Age 5-11 years: Full charge if you select the whole berth, half price if you select a child seat without berth
  • Age 12 years onwards: Full charge for everyone
