Catching up to rivals

There have been several reports in recent times about the app working on one feature por another.

With the avatars, it may be trying to compete with virtual workspace apps like Zoom, Google workspace.

There are a number of features that WhatsApp lacks but rivals like Telegram have.

It appears that the app is trying to play catch up.

How it would work

WABetaInfo reports that the feature will make the user appear as an animated avatar during video calls.

They will be able to create their own virtual avatars for video calls and use them instead of their own face.

These avatars will replace profile pictures or the feed from your phone’s front camera on demand.

How it appears

The portal shared a screenshot which showcases a new button which states: ‘Switch to avatar’.

The user will have to pick this option from the live front camera to make and see their animated avatars.

The avatars will also be available as stickers that can be shared within groups and chats.

Availability

This is similar to how Memoji works in Apple products.

The feature is currently in the beta version for Android and could be available for iPhone users as well.

However, it has been in development for a while and is still not in its final form.

Other features in the works

Another feature being tested is the ability to silently exit groups the user is a part of, without other members knowing.

There is also a blur tool for desktop that is being tested.

This would allow users to blur out certain parts of an image.
