Low Popularity, Occupancy
The Mumbai Railway Division runs around 80 air-conditioned local trains on both the Central and Western Railway on a daily basis.
On average 43,000 passengers travel on these trains.
A comprehensive survey by the railway authority last year showed that high fares and less frequency are the main reasons behind low occupancy of the AC trains.
Taking Citizens’ Feedback
Danve explained the decision to cut fares, saying that the public demanded a revision of the price of card tickets of AC local.
They suggested a reduction of the existing fare by at least 20-30 per cent.
Taking into consideration the responses and the convenience of Mumbaikars prompted the reduction of single journey ticket price of AC local trains.
There is no word yet as to when these prices will come into effect, however officials began work on the implementation after Danve made the announcement.
