India recorded a new peak in Covid-19 cases, adding 1,70,195 fresh infections on Sunday (April 11), depicting a 11.6% rise from the previous day’s record of over 1.52 lakh.

Adding over 1.7 lakh new cases on Sunday, India recorded the highest single day count in the world, followed sluggishly by Brazil (93,317 cases) and US (76,377 cases).

Of the total count recorded on Sunday, 63,294 cases were registered only in Maharashtra, making it the worst-ever single day count in the state. This number takes the tally of total cases in Maharashtra to 34.07 lakh.

Amid the meteoric rise in fresh infections across Maharashtra, the state CM Uddhav Thackeray conducted a meeting with the state Covid-19 task force members to discuss the alleged imposition of a two-week lockdown in Maharashtra.

While the state Covid-19 task force is of the view of imposing a full lockdown in the state, a definite decision will be taken by the CM after April 14.

Finalized Decision on MH Lockdown to be Taken After April 14

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray met with the state Covid-19 task force members on Sunday and engaged in a detailed discussion on imposing stricter curbs across the state, to control the mushrooming cases.

A detailed discussion took place in the meeting, including availability of oxygen and beds, use of Remdesivir, treatment protocols, increase in capacity of facilities, fines for violating Covid-19 protocols and imposition of restrictions.

Other members attending the meeting included state Health Minister Rajesh Tope, Directorate of Medical Education and Research Dr TP Lahane, Taskforce chief Dr Sanjay Oak.

“Duration of the lockdown and how to handle its economic fallout was discussed during today’s meeting”, stated Rajesh Tope.

In the virtual meeting, the task force members recommended imposing a lockdown in the state, given the prevailing situation. However, a final decision on the same will be taken by the CM Thackeray after April 14.

Lockdown of 2-3 Weeks Can be Imposed in MH

Maharashtra Congress Minister Aslam Sheikh informed after that while everyone attending the meeting held the view of imposing a lockdown in the state, some believed the lockdown’s duration to be of 2 weeks, while others believed it to be as long as 3 weeks.

A meeting will be held again today (April 12).

“In today’s meeting with the state COVID-19 Task Force, everyone was of the view to impose lockdown in the state. SOPs and guidelines for it to be discussed.”, informed Sheikh.

CM Thackeray will meet bureaucrats tonight at 9 pm and hold a meeting with trade associations on Monday. Any decision on further restrictions may be taken tomorrow, as stated by reports.
