A new method of scamming people has been discovered, where fraudsters are robbing money through Whatsapp.

If you get any text message on WhatsApp from a friend with an OTP, be sure not to share the OTP with anyone!

Read on to find out how this fraud works and how to be safe from it.

New Method Of Fraud: Here’s How People Are Being Scammed Through WhatsApp

Under the new scam, a message is sent to the targeted user which appears to be sent by a contact of the victim. The “contact” asks for a code that has been received by the user, which is a confirmation code that WhatsApp sends to its users if a sign in is attempted from a different device.

Alexis Conran, a radio show host, has talked about the fraud on Twitter in detail. Conran tweets: It starts with this text message that arrives on your phone out of the blue. Immediately after you get a WhatsApp message from someone in your contacts. The message reads ‘Hello, sorry I sent you a 6-digit code by SMS by mistake, Can you transfer it to me, please? It’s urgent.”

Additionally, the contact who is asking for the code has also been on the receiving end of the scam as well; the WhatsApp account of this contact has also been hacked by the scammers.

If the code is sent to the scammer, your WhatsApp will be hacked. Conran has explained the scam, “…your friend’s account has been hacked. Scammers are now trying to hack all their contacts. You are one of them. They are trying to set up WhatsApp on a new device with your number. WhatsApp acknowledges this and sends a 6-digit authorisation code to your mobile phone by SMS.”

What To Do Avoid Being A Victim Of This Fraud?

Firstly, you need to enable two-factor authentication or two-step verification on your WhatsApp account.

Next, if you do receive any such message, you need to call up the friend who is asking for code and verify if they have really sent the code. Also, they need to be informed that their WhatsApp has been hacked. This helps because once they log in to their account, the scammers will not be given access.
