Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana, originally aired from January 25 to July 31 in 1988 was a popular show during its time.

This brings us to 2020, when after the nation-wide lockdown was announced, in response to contain the novel coronavirus pandemic, Doordarshan, popularly known as DD decided to  re-run the mythological show on public demand.

Not only was it widely watched and admired even after over 3 decades of its original launch, Ramayana was also announced to be the most-watched entertainment show with 7.7 crore viewers on April 16, making it the most-watched show on a single day.

After Ramayana ended, DD started with Uttar Ramayana. Yesterday, May 3 was when the last episode of Uttar Ramayan aired.

So, the news here is that after breaking records on Doordarshan, Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan will now air on Star Plus. BR Chopra’s Mahabharat will be telecast on Colors. 

Ramayana to Air on Star Plus Now

Aired initially more than three decades ago, Ramayana along with its other popular shows of the 80s such as Mahabharata was rerun from March 28 on public demand.

The reruns of the popular 80s shows pulled up the viewership for DD as well.

According to the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) the reruns of Mahabharat and Ramayan resulted in nearly 40,000% jump in viewership in the evening and morning bands in the week ended April 3. 

Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan will air on Star Plus from May 4 at 9.30 pm, while BR Chopra’s Mahabharat has occupied the 7-9 pm slot on Colors. It will be telecast from Monday to Friday, starting from May 4.

What More?

This classic show by Ramanand Sagar features Arun Govil as Ram, Sunil Lahri as Laxman, Deepika Chikhalia as Sita, Arvind Trivedi as Ravana, and the Late Dara Singh as Hanuman.

Other shows re aired along with Ramayana were Mahabharat, Byomkesh Bakshi, and Buniyaad, starting from March 28, on public demand.

After Uttar Ramayana comes to an end, DD is all set to air the Ramanand Sagar-directed Shri Krishna from May 3.

Here, Sarvadaman D portrays the role of adult Shri Krishna whereas Swapnil Joshi is seen in the character of teenage Shri Krishna.
