Ticketless Travellers Paid Rs 100 Crore Fine In This Indian Railways Zone In 6 Months!

Ticketless travelling is a big headache for Indian Railways. Approximately Rs 400-500 crore is lost by Indian Railways, due to passengers who intentionally or unintentionally don’t buy a ticket, and still travel by train.

This year onwards, Indian Railways has decided to clamp down heavily on such ticketless travellers, and the result has started coming in.

Central Railways Earn Rs 100 Crore From Ticketless Travellers

In the period between April 1st to September 24th, 2019, Central Railways earned Rs 100 crore from the passengers who didn’t have any train ticket.

This means Rs 55 lakh per day earning for the railways from this division.

Central Railways comprises of 5 divisions: Mumbai, Bhusawal, Nagpur, Solapur and Pune.

Here is the breakdown of the fines collected, as per the zones:

• Mumbai Division: Earning of Rs 41.21 crore with 8.13 lakh registered cases
• Bhusawal Division: Earning of Rs 17.00 crore with  2.83 lakh registered cases
• Nagpur Division: Earning of Rs 10.46 crore with 2.31 lakh registered cases
• Pune Division: Earning of Rs 8.79 crore with 1.72 lakh registered cases
• Solapur Division: Earning of Rs 12.95 crore with 2.70 lakh registered cases

Meanwhile the Headquarters squad earned Rs 9.88 crore with 1.45 lakh registered cases all over the divisions.

Ticketless Travelling Is Increasing?

Rs 100 crore revenue generated via penalties from ticketless travellers between April and September this year is 13.99% more compared to last year when Rs 88 crore was generated via fines.

While 17.42 lakh ticketless travellers were caught last year, this year, this number increased to 19.15 lakh passengers, who had no ticket. This is an increase of 9.92%.

Interestingly, the drive against ticketless travellers led to catching of:

6 fake ticket checkers

4 fake police personnel and 1 fake catering staff as well.

Also, during the checking drive, lost children were reunited with their families.

Another interesting fact: In the last three years, that in 2017, 2018 and 2019, Indian Railways collected total penalty of Rs 1377 crore, across all the divisions and zones combined. This is a direct increase of 31%, compared to the previous three-year period.
