Chinese Smartphones Continue To Dominate Indian Smartphone Market Despite Security Concerns

Latest data from research firm IDC regarding sales of smartphones in India have arrived, and there is some excellent news for Chinese smartphone companies.

Despite Indian Govt.’s accusations of data theft, imposition of anti-dumping duty and more, the performance of Chinese handset makers in India is unstoppable.

In fact, as per the latest data for Q2 2017, 4 major Chinese brands: Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Lenovo have a combined market share of 45% in Indian smartphone maker, making them invincible.

Besides, this also indicates the projection of sales during the oncoming festive season – It seems that Indian consumers will continue to shower love on Chinese brands.

Overall, the Indian mobile industry witnessed a healthy growth of 6.5%, compared to last quarter.

Indian Smartphone Market: Chinese Smartphones Domination Continues

IDC has just released their Q2 2017 data for smartphones sales, and as per the numbers, top 4 Chinese smartphone manufacturers: Xiaomi, Oppo, Lenovo and Vivo have grabbed 45% of Indian smartphone market.

Samsung is the #1 brand with 24% market share, but after them, it is the Chinese who are calling the shots.

Xiaomi is at #2 with 17% share; Vivo is at #3 with 13% share; and Oppo is at #4 with 8% share and Lenovo is at #5 with 7% share.

‘Others’ constitute 31% share, which include Indian top selling brands like Micromax and others.

Xiaomi Maintains Best Growth; But Samsung Loses Focus

Out of Chinese brands, Xiaomi churned out the best growth rate as they sold 23% more handsets in Q2 of 2017, compared to last quarter.

Redmi Note 4, which recently exploded in a user’s pocket, has become the highest selling smartphone in India’s history (in a single quarter), as they sold 2 million units in this duration.

Vivo showcased a growth of 26%, compared to last quarter, as they captured 13% market share.

On the other hand, Oppo lost their market share by 13%, and Lenovo dropped by 25%, QoQ. But, despite these drops and less sales, both Oppo and Lenovo continued to dominate the market with their massive sales volume.

Samsung sold 4% less smartphones, compared to last quarter.

If we talk about feature phones, then total of 34 million units were shipped in Q2 of 2017, which is 8.9% more than last quarter. This should be excellent news for Reliance Jio, which wants to replace feature phones with their Jio Phone, effectively costing Rs. 0.
