When the whole world is buzzing with the talks of electric vehicles, it is tempting to forget that there are other less-polluting options as well. One such option is that of CNG. In recent years, CNG has gained popularity. And owing to this increased demand, many car manufacturers have started to provide authentic CNG kits for their multiple offerings. This time it’s Tata who has started accepting bookings for its new CNG models.

Tata introduces a range of CNG powered cars

Recently, Tata Motors announced the launch of its CNG-powered car range in the Indian market. These models will be unveiled on 19th January 2022. The company will likely introduce the Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG first, as dealerships across the country have already begun accepting bookings for these. Altroz CNG and Punch, CNG are also expected to be launched soon.

Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG, both, will come with the same 1.2-liter, naturally aspirated, inline-3 petrol engine as their standard (petrol-powered) versions. And obviously, as the name suggests, both will be loaded with a factory-fitted CNG kit.

It should be noted that the CNG cars will be available with just a manual transmission option. Tata Tiago CNG has already started arriving at dealerships across the country, and spy pictures of the car suggest that apart from the ‘i-CNG’ badge on the tailgate, the rest of the look will have no differentiation from the original models. The CNG tank will be placed in the boot, which would leave practically no space for luggage.

CNG option would be available on select versions only

Notably, the CNG option will be available only on select trim levels of the hatchback and the sedan. No changes are expected to the interiors and equipment lists of these CNG cars compared to their equivalent petrol variants.

Tata Tiago is currently available from Rs. 4.99 lakh to Rs. 7.07 lakh, while the price of Tigor ranges from Rs. 5.67 lakh to Rs. 7.84 lakh (ex-showroom prices, New Delhi) in the Indian market. The price of the CNG variants will be higher by a margin of around Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 70,000 than the equivalent petrol variants.

After entering the market, Tata Tiago CNG will rival the likes of Maruti S-Presso CNG, Maruti Wagon-R CNG, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG, and Hyundai Santro CNG. At the same time Tata Tigor CNG, Tata Tigor will be competing with the upcoming Maruti Dzire CNG.

It should be noted that the demand for CNG vehicles has been increasing in India in the last few months. Till November’21, a total of 1,36,357 units of CNG cars were sold in the last eight months.
