Now TCS is utilizing AI to pair individuals with their skillset to fill open positions.

When the epidemic broke out last year, TCS had to figure out how to move its 4 lakh-strong workforce online.

They achieved the major feat in 3 weeks.

Today, only 4% or around 20,000 employees work from office.

Milind Lakkad, Chief Human Resources Officer of TCS, said that normally it would recruit for its projects from the locations of specific delivery centres.

Project Allocation Using AI And Cloud

Now TCS is utilizing AI to pair individuals with their skillset to fill open positions.

With this initiative, TCS no longer has to source candidates from any physical location.

The technology in use here, allied Talent Cloud, is facilitating access to a larger talentbase and is attaching them to roles servicing client needs with better precision, faster allocations and superior outcomes.

Benefits Of Using Advanced Tech For Sourcing

For example, if a cybersecurity team has to be assembled, the hiring will not be location-based but rather will be sourced from all over the country and beyond since they will all be working from home.

This helps the firm’s customers to get speedier project ramp-ups thanks to its “agile methodologies”.

A senior manager has said that agile has enabled sourcing from anywhere in the world and with this, customers are assured that the best talent delivers to them, regardless of location.

Training And Skill Development

TCS also has training and development programmes in place which impart technological skills to select engineering graduates.

Despite the pandemic’s second wave in April, TCS employees spent 43 million learning hours in FY 2021 involving over 379,000 employees trained in new technologies and 457,000 employees in Agile methods.

TCS also launched a Contextual Masters program available for 16,000 carefully selected employees who have extensive knowledge of clients’ businesses and technology contexts.

Work From Home Long-Term Vision

TCS is aiming for a maximum of only 25% of its workforce to be in office at any given time by 2025, a vision it has called Vision 25×25.

The firm has also set a target in which its employees would spend a maximum of only 25% of their time at a TCS facility.

It quickly shifted to the work from home model with its plan called Secure Borderless Workspaces which focuses on business continuity.

The plan was carried out by 1,100 business unit heads in India, each of whom manage 400 employees.

Speedy Transition To New Work Model

The business heads predicted lockdowns to begin from March last year and accordingly moved fast to send their employees home and asist younger staff with their landlords.

With this proactive approach, employees got to take their desktops home before the national lockdown began.

Now that there was some time on the company’s hands, it could now focus on a major need of its now remote employees- their mental health.

Mental Wellbeing Of Employees

TCS began extending counselling and self-help services along with medical helplines, ambulance services and first line Covid Care Centers at TCS premises.

Lakkad recognised that not all can seamlessly adjust to their new working reality given their differing personal situations at home.

To this effect, the firm began encouraging its staff to “switch off and refresh” instead of slogging away on their computers all day.

HR also stays in touch with employees on a one-on-one basis at least once a quarter.

Lakkad has been lauded for prioritising his employees’ mental wellbeing and for displaying empathy and genuine concern.

He has also opened up the internal conversation around mental health.

Lakkad has thereby cemented his legacy with TCS as one of transition to a new working model and also helping employees navigate challenges in their personal lives.
