Mediatek Beats Qualcomm To Become World’s Biggest Chipset Maker (Shocking Facts!)

In a shocking turn of events, Taiwan based Mediatek has comprehensively beaten Qualcomm to become world’s #1 chipset maker, for Q3, 2020.

How did this happen?

Here are some shocking facts…

Mediatek Becomes World’s #1 Chipset Maker

For Q3 of 2020, Taiwan based Mediatek grabbed 31% market share in the smartphone processor market, thereby becoming #1 company in this sector.

This way, Mediatek has overtaken Qualcomm, which was world’s #1 chipset maker till now.

Qualcomm manufactures the popular Snapdragon series of processors, and had maintained their lead till now, which has now been broken by Mediatek.

As of Q3, of 2020, Mediatek is leading the race with 31% market share, whereas Qualcomm has slipped to #2 position with 29% market share.

HiSiicon, Samsung and Apple are tied at #3 position with 12% market share each.

How Did This Happen?

As per the research done by CounterPoint Research, it has been revealed that Mediatek captured the lucrative budget and mid-budget smartphone segment, which are provided between $150 to $200, and this changed their game.

For this segment of smartphones, India and China are the biggest markets, and Mediatek spread their dominance in these two countries, which helped them become world’s #1 chipset vendor.

The ban on Huawei’s smartphones by the US also helped Mediatek, whereas they closed some big deals with Samsung, Xiaomi and Honor which helped them.

Explaining the reasons behind Mediatek’s sudden rise, CounterPoint’s Research Director Dale Gai said, “MediaTek’s strong market share gain in Q3 2020 happened due to three reasons – strong performance in the mid-end smartphone price segment ($100-$250) and emerging markets like LATAM and MEA, the US ban on Huawei and finally wins in leading OEMs like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Honor,”

In the 5G smartphone market, Qualcomm is #1 chipset company with massive 39% market share.
