BSNL Will Fire 20,000 Workers Under Contract; Total 50,000 Workers To Be Terminated
In one of the biggest layoffs in the history of India, state-run telecom carrier BSNL will reportedly fire 20,000 contractual workers, all across the nation.
30,000 have already been asked to leave, as per BSNL Employees Union, which makes it total of 50,000 contractual workers who will be asked to leave their jobs.
Officially, BSNL has not shared the exact numbers of contractual workers to be removed.
20,000 BSNL Contract Workers To Be Asked To Leave
BSNL Employees’ Union has claimed that 20,000 contract workers are being removed by the management, as they don’t have money to pay any salaries.
BSNL Employees Union General Secretary P Abhimany has informed PTI that 30,000 workers have already been removed in the last 12-14 months, and 20,000 more will be asked to leave.
This way, 50,000+ contract workers from BSNL will be out of their jobs.
The employee union has also critisized BSNL for not paying past dues to the employees who opted for VRS, and no salary for those who opted to stay in.
In a letter to BSNL CMD, the Union said, “Above all, the poor contract workers are not paid wages for the past 14 months, as a result of which 13 contract workers have committed suicide. Who is responsible for all these deaths? Undoubtedly, it is the BSNL management, under your stewardship,”
BSNLs Financial Situation Deteriorates
Although BSNL hasn’t informed how many contract workers will be fired, but it’s confirmed that they are reducing their workforce, even more now.
On September 1st, BSNL management issued an order to their HR Dept., to reduce as many contractual workers as they can.
The letter asked all the General Managers, “to take immediate steps to curtail the expenditure on contract works and reduce engagement of labours through contractors”.
As per the letter, each circle of BSNL should “draw a clear road map for non-engagement of contract labours immediately”.
As per the BSNL Employees’ Union, BSNL has not been able to roll out 4G, even after 10 months of the revival package.
