Qualcomm announced its latest Quick Charge 5.0 which will be able to finish up 50 percent charge in 5 minutes. With the fight for the fastest fast charging technology has started to intensify, now it’s Qualcomm with its latest technology for the future smartphones. Realme recently unveiled 125W UltraDART fast charging technology.
Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and all are in the race of the top fast charging solutions.
While these companies will have some hold with their own top-speed fast charging technologies, but Qualcomm has a definite advantage here due to its processors. The all-new Quick Charge 5 is a major improvement over QC 4.0, as now it supports up to 100W fast charging.
Qualcomm Quick Charge 5: What’s In The Box?
With Qualcomm Quick Charge 5, a 4,500mAh battery can be charged from 0 to 50 percent in just 5 minutes. The whole battery can be charged to 100 percent in under 15 minutes with the new QC 5.0. The technology utilizes dual charging solution to charge up a battery.
Qualcomm Quick Charge 5.0 splits the battery into two cells connected to charge in series to increase the voltage. QC 5.0 also supports triple charge and will split up the cells into three halves.
QC 5.0 supports up to 100W fast charging keeping the battery 10 percent cooler and is 70 more efficient to boot.
The QC 5.0 supported charging bricks will require to support output voltages between 3.3 and 20 Volts at minimum. This could be 3.3 or 5 Amps of current or 5+ Amps for the bigger ones. Quick Charge 5 technology will be based on USB Power Delivery PPS and backwards compatibility with QC2.
Faster Power Output, Safer Delivery: QC 5.0
The chipmaker has claimed that the system is much safer than the plain Power Delivery system. The QC 5.0 technology comes with 8 levels of voltage protection, 3 levels of current protection, 3 levels of thermal protection and 3 timer protections, plus overvoltage protection at 25 V.
There’s also the new PD protocol which will measure the characteristics that determine the actual maximum current it can supply, but the system will keep a contact check on heat and the thermals.
Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 is said to be available by the third quarter of this year. The company will launch two charge controller chips which manufacturers can use: SMB1396 and MSB1398. The wired and wireless input can be used with the 1 cell and 2 cell batteries, depending on the maker’s designs.
One of the cell designs will be limited to 45W charging at a time. Both the current Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 865 Plus now support the new Qualcomm QC5, but will need the new SMB chips. The SMB chips will power the processors to support the latest charging technology.
