Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek has been slowly upgrading its chips to take on its rival Qualcomm in the mid-range segment. After Helio P70, the company has now announced another 12nm chipset, Helio P90.
The latest chipset will come with an all-new Fusion AI engine.
The company was recently in the news for its Helio P70 chipset, which powered Realme U1. The new Helio P70 is an upgrade over the U1 SoC and is said to be 15 percent faster than its predecessor.

MediaTek Helio P90: What’s New?
The Helio P90 has been claimed by the company to offer 15 percent better performance over its predecessor. The all-new Helio P90 will use upgraded elements like Fusion AI architecture.
Mid-range phones fail to offer good AI performance, but the Helio P90 chip is aiming to challenge Qualcomm.

Fusion AI Architecture
The Fusion AI architecture on the new Helio P90 will help the smartphones offer better AI performance. It helps the chipset boost up different AI based functions on the smartphone. This will include AI scene recommendations and object recognition.
Improved Low Light Photography
The Helio P90 will come with features like intelligent noise reduction and light balancing to improve low light photography. The AI will help to correct lighting under dim conditions or unfavorable lighting.
12nm Fabrication Process
The Helio P90 is built on a 12 nm fabrication process. This will help the smartphone to deliver faster processing to offer an improved performance. The SoC will also support faster Face Unlock with improved security features.
Improved Eight-Core Configuration
The MediaTek Helio P90 will feature a two-cluster and eight-core configuration. This will include dual Cortex-A75 cores clocked up to 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 clocked speeds of up to 2GHz.
Up to 8GB RAM & UFS 2.1 Standard Secure Storage
Helio P90 will come with extra RAM storage. The SoC can extend support for up to 8GB of LPDDR4X memory on the smartphone. Additionally, the platform also offers the latest UFS 2.1 standard secure storage.
Upgraded Imaging Capabilities
Helio P90 can handle 48MP camera sensors or any dual camera setup split into arrangements of 24-megapixel and 16-megapixel. Helio P90 also supports videos at 480fps.
Doubled Peak Download Speed
The new P90 has been upgraded from Category 7 to Category 12. It has doubled the downstream peak download speeds to up to 600Mbps with the help of new 256QAM and 4×4 MIMO.
Dual 4G VoLTE Support
The new Helio P90 will not support 5G. Though the internals has been specifically manufactured to support dual VoLTE on 4G.
MediaTek Helio P90 Smartphones | Upcoming Helio P90 Smartphones
The chipset is expected to power smartphones in the mid-range category of around maybe Rs 25,000. The Helio P90 come with certain limitations compared to other chipsets in terms of performance, imaging, and connectivity.
MediaTek Helio P90’s direct competition in the segment will be Snapdragon 670 and Snapdragon 710. Even the new SD 675 may take a dig at P90 as well.
Helio P90 will be available to partners soon with smartphones expected to hit the market by early 2019, probably by February. Oppo is expected to the first to use the chip, and later maybe Vivo and Xiaomi.
