Why Asus ZenFone Zoom S?
With iPhones, Pixels and other high-end flagships in the market, hardly any mid-range phones stand out. The newly launched Asus ZenFone Zoom S has some neat tricks up its sleeve to challenge some of the premium flagships in the market, and even beat some of them in certain areas.
The Best Mid Range Camera Phone
The Asus ZenFone Zoom S has been marketed by the company as a camera-centric smartphone, and the smartphone features 2.3X optical zoom and two cameras at the back.
The device comes with one wide-angle and one telephoto lens combination. The standard lens has a 12MP Sony IMX 362 sensor with f/1.7 aperture and gets a 4-axis Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) to help with shaky situations. The telephoto lens also has also a 12MP Sony IMX214 sensor with 2.3x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom. Up front, The ZenFone Zoom S sports a 13MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture.
The camera UI features DSLR-like settings, and is smooth and easy to use. Users get multiple modes with options to adjust settings like ISO and depth of field. You can save images in RAW format, which gives the most data to work with in post-processing.
Artificial And Low Light Performance
The camera performs well under artificial light, and retains a good amount of detail with good contrast and accurate colours. The camera does a commendable job under low-light conditions. It does not show any sort of shutter lag and can capture above average images.
It is the world’s slimmest and lightest 5.5 inch smartphone, packing in a mammoth 5,000mAh battery.
Design And Build
With a premium metal build, the smartphone features a sturdy finish. It sports dual cameras at the back, with the fingerprint sensor placed in the usual spot, below the cameras.
Asus ZenFone Zoom S sports a 5.5 inch full HD, AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels and pixel density of 401 PPI. It comes with Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top.
The smartphone features the stable Snapdragon 625 octa-core chipset clocked at 2.0GHZ clubbed with Adreno 506 GPU and 4GB of RAM.
Asus ZenFone Zoom S runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, with ZenUI 3.0 on top. Asus have promised update to Android 7 Nougat.
The device comes with 64GB of on-board storage which can be further expanded up to 2TB with an external memory card.
It has a dual-camera setup at the rear. One of them’s a standard 12MP Sony IMX 362 sensor with f/1.7 aperture. The second one’s a 12MP telephoto Sony IMX214 sensor with 2.3x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom. Up front, Asus ZenFone Zoom S sports a 13MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture with screen flash and beautification mode.
The rear cameras feature the TriTech+ technology, which combines Dual Pixel Phase Detection AF, a 2nd Gen Laser AF, and a Subject tracking AF, allowing the user to focus on the subject in 0.03s.
SIM Support And Connectivity
The Asus ZenFone Zoom S is a dual-SIM 4G smartphone with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a USB Type C port and 3.5mm headphone jack. It misses out on NFC though, which should have been included at this price.
The Asus ZenFone Zoom S packs a mammoth 5,000mAh non-removable battery. It takes around 3 hours to charge it to full from 5%. Because of its huge battery, it also acts as a power bank and can charge other phones.
Price, Variants And Availability
The ZenFone Zoom S costs Rs. 26,999/- and is available in Navy Black and Glacier Silver colour options. It is available exclusively on Flipkart.
The Verdict: Should You Buy?
Overall, the Asus ZenFone Zoom S is powerful, reliable and performs really well in day-to-day use. The cameras are extremely good for a mid-range smartphone. The huge battery 5,000 mAh battery will last more than a day, even for heavy users.
The Zenfone Zoom S feels slightly overpriced, when you consider that the Xiaomi Mi A1 sports almost similar specifications, with the exception of a big battery. The price difference between these two phones is considerable.
That said, if you are a fan of the ZenFone series and absolutely need the mammoth battery and the dual cameras in one smartphone, then the Zenfone Zoom S is the smartphone for you.
