Latest reports have confirmed that the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) is scheduled to be completed and operational by the end of 2024. It will be connecting two regions of Mumbai – Chirle in Navi Mumbai to Sewri in Mumbai. 

The MTHL has been envisaged 35 years ago. 

Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) To Be Completed By 2024

The MTHL will reduce the time required to travel between Pune and Mumbai by a considerable amount of time. The sea bridge will reportedly lie between Sewri and Nhava Sheva (JNPT), and will reduce travel time by 90 minutes. 

As of now, commuters need to go by the Vashi Creek bridge and there is no other option available to reach Mumbai. People traveling from Pune to Mumbai currently use the P D’Mello Road-Freeway-Sion-Panvel Expressway Mumbai-Pune Expressway route.

Whereas, after the new route is completed, people will travel through the P D’Mello Road-Freeway (go out beforehand of Sewri)-MTHL, onto Mumbai-Pune Expressway through Chirle route.

As per reports, “This important link having length of about 21.8 Km is being implemented considering the importance of connectivity between the island city and the mainland.”

Reduced Travel Time To Mumbai

Once the route is completed, it will assuredly result in reduced travel time for those traveling from Mumbai towards Navi Mumbai, Navi Mumbai International Airport, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Panvel, Alibaug, Pune, and Goa.

Through the new MTHL, the government intends to increase the growth of Navi Mumbai, quicker access to Navi Mumbai International Airport, and connectivity to Pune Expressway and to South India. 

We have also reported that the terminal for the Mumbai-Hyderabad bullet train which will be connected with the under-construction international airport, besides connectivity to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.

The government has made previous attempts in the years 2006, 2007, and 2013 to complete this bridge, but they haven’t been successful.

Recently there was news that a draft for various regions in the state has been prepared by the Maharashtra railway infrastructure development company (MAHARAIL). Many projects are proposed in this draft. One of them includes a high-speed train project between Pune and Mumbai. Almost one hour of travel time will be reduced by these railway projects.
