Nearly after two years, in India today regular international flights have resumed. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the international flights had been operating in an “air bubble” arrangement with several nations for the last 2 years.

The New Indian Summer Schedule

The number of flights was restricted to some 2,000 a week and ticket prices had soared high, under the previous “air bubble” agreements. In a new summer schedule, starting today till October 29, as many as 60 airlines from 40 countries can now fly to India during the summer schedule.

This is seen as a silver lining as the industry experts feel that this could be a sign of hope for the passengers as they could expect some airfare relief. However, following the Russia Ukraine war the fuel prices have risen steeply in the last month post the military operation was launched by Russia in Ukraine.

Airfares, Capacity and Ukraine-Russia Conflict

Sanjiv Kapoor, incoming CEO at Jet Airways said that “Every time capacity is increased, airfares do head downwards. The only complicating factor this time is the war in Ukraine which is resulting in oil prices spiking.”

Since the restrictions on international flights were lifted today, travel portals are witnessing a spike in flight-related searches.

Rajesh Magow, CEO of MakeMyTrip echoes the sentiment saying that there has been a 40 per cent increase in month-on-month searches. Magow warned that “The dampener still is the fares due to the war”.
