To Tackle Omicron
The Novavax-developed vaccine has demonstrated 90.4% efficacy in a clinical trial involving 29,960 people in South Africa and 100% at preventing moderate or severe disease.
An additional booster dose of Covovax after two doses of AZ/Covishield produces further immune resistance to the new variant.
WHO And Indian Docs Approve
The World Health Organization (WHO) has granted it emergency approval, making it the 9th vaccine approved for emergency use.
Top Indian government scientist Anurag Agrawal has also vouched for it, saying that it “induces a strong immune response and has an excellent safety profile.”
Agrawal is one of the directors of the government’s genome sequencing monitoring agency INSACOG (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium).
Novavax expects to begin manufacturing doses of the variant-specific shot in January.
Treatment Regimen
The vaccine consists of two 0.5ml doses which are to be administered intramuscularly 21 days apart.
As to how it will take on Omicron, Novavax’s President of Research and Development, Gregory M. Glenn said that the company has cloned, expressed and characterized the Omicron spike protein vaccine and will soon enter the GMP-phase of production.
Anti Covid Pill
The fight against the new Omicron variant has gotten stronger now that the first anti Covid pill has been authorized by U.S. health regulators.
The pill called Paxlovid is a Pfizer drug that can be taken at home to tackle the worst effects of the virus.
Benefits Over Other Drugs
Another antiviral pill from Merck is also expected to be authorised.
But Paxlovid will be the preferred option due to its mild side effects and superior effectiveness including a nearly 90% decreased risk of hospitalization and death in a high-risk group.
Course Of Treatment
Those taking the pill must be an adult or child ages 12 and older with a positive COVID-19 test, at high risk of hospitalization, and within five days of symptoms appearing.
The high risk group includes older people and those with conditions like obesity and heart disease.
Three pills have to be taken twice a day for five days.
Two of the pills are Paxlovid and the third is a different antiviral that helps boost levels of the main drug in the body.
