PhonePe has started charging processing fees per transaction for mobile recharges!

So the next time you recharge (above Rs 50 ) through UPI, you will be charged Re 1 to Rs 2 per transaction. Other digital payment apps offer the same service for free.

“On recharges, we are running a very small-scale experiment where a few users are paying for mobile recharges. Recharges below Rs 50 are not charged, recharges between Rs 50 and Rs 100 are charged Re 1 and above Rs 100 are charged Rs 2. Essentially, as a part of the experiment, a majority of users are either not paying anything or paying Re 1,”

A PhonePe spokesperson said.

Other transactions on PhonePe and money transfers will continue to remain free of charge.

“We are running an experiment on our platform to a very small base where a few users are paying for recharges. Most of the base is either not being charged anything or is paying Re 1 as a part of the experiment we are running,”

“On bill payments, most players and biller websites charge a processing or convenience fee on credit cards like us, and this has been the industry norm for a while now.”

The spokesperson added.

Regarding UPI Charges

So back in January 2020, according to the Zero Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) policy, UPI players are not allowed to levy any fees.

Merchants should not be charged any fees for digital payments made through UPI, RuPay debit cards, or UPI QR codes, according to the rules.
