Active Subscribers

Jio may have the edge on 4G subscriber base but Airtel succeeds the telco, with 97.74% of its users being active.

The rate for Jio is 78.18%.

Interestingly, both companies have an identical number of active subscribers- Airtel with 346.07 million and Jio with 346.49 million.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) both lost active subscribers in the month of July 2021.

Vi’s active subscriber base shrank from 88.43% in June to 87.67% in July 2021.

In the same period, BSNL’s active subscriber percentage declined from 50.63% to 50.49%.

New Subscribers

Jio added more subscribers than Airtel in the month of July 2021.

It added the most number of subscribers- 6.51 million.

It is followed by Bharti Airtel with 1.94 million, while both Vi and BSNL lost subscribers.

Vodafone Idea lost 1.43 million subscribers while BSNL lost 1.01 million.

Market Share

Currently, Jio dominates Indian telecom with market share of 37.34%, followed by Bharti Airtel (29.83%), Vodafone Idea (22.91%), and BSNL (9.64%).

Airtel could have been at number one had it not been saddled with an enormous amount of debt.

Jio’s success in adding new users might not mean much if a large percentage of it are inactive.

The users that are active are low average revenue per user (ARPU) customers.

Rural Markets

Out of the total number of new users Jio has onboarded, 3.48 million users are in rural markets, solidifying its presence there.

What helped Jio was its competitively priced offers on its 4G feature phone, JioPhone, that others couldn’t match.

In the same regions, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharti Airtel lost 0.99 million and 0.41 million customers respectively.

Total Number Of Subscribers

Presently, Jio has a gross user base of 443.21 million, followed by Airtel with 354.05 million.

In a sign of inability to effectively compete with the top two, Vi’s subscriber base has declined to 271.9 million.

TRAI data reports that the mobile user base in India is over 1.186 billion strong as of July 2021, registering an addition of 6.01 million.
