TCS Deploying Hybrid Work Model For 5 Lakh Employees As Offices Open Across India

The work model to be adopted is ultimately dependent on what clients want.

TCS is looking at a hybrid work model for the future in which only 25% of the total employees will work from the office.

This is the plan for the company’s Vision 25/25 in which by 2025 a maximum of only 25% of its workforce will be in office at any given time.

No Complete Switch To WFH

Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran believes that in-person interactions are a “social necessity.”

Chief Operating Officer N Ganapathy Subramaniam (NGS) shares a similar opinion.

He believes that an office is an important place to get important tasks done.

It is also important because employees working in the office are able to dedicate all of their attention to their work.

Therefore, a future return to offices cannot be ruled out since the top management see office work as more important despite the flexibility offered by remote work.

Hybrid Work Model

NGS said that the work model to be adopted is ultimately dependent on what clients want.

The country’s largest IT services firm has given the onus to project managers.

These managers can fix flexible schedules such as bringing in employees to work 2 days a week.

Another example is calling workers in for a month, and then allowing them to go offline for the next 2 months.

Another factor to consider is client visits which will require in-person presentations and demonstrations.

Nurturing Talent

On the topic of the ongoing surge in demand for specialised IT talent, NGS believes that India has no dearth of supply.

Most IT firms here train their people instead of trying to source from outside.

They invest in their own people and build talent from the ground up.

Fresh hires such as graduates from universities also serve as the bottom of the employee pyramid.

Last year, TCS hired between 40-50,000 freshers and laterals.

Tackling Attrition

Firms are working on retaining their best talent by offering them good and challenging work.

Secondly, in order to grab potential employees’ attention away from rival companies, they are offered the opportunity to work with good people.

The third step towards talent retention is, of course, an attractive and competitive salary.

Hence, the key to keeping talent from jumping ship is a combination of the three factors mentioned above.

Appeal Of Remote Work

Remote work holds a lot of promise as it has put to rest fears that productivity takes a hit when not working from office.

There has been an increase in women in leadership roles due to the flexibility of the work model.

Having a major percentage of employees working from home also helps the company to reduce its global carbon footprint.

In a wholesome anecdote, NGS said that the environment is “getting cleaner” as he has seen birds which he has never seen in his life before.

Mass Remote Work And Its Harms

In countries around the world, sending the majority of the workforce home has led to financial losses for small businesses.

Service-based sectors have also been adversely affected since employees, who during normal times would have spent on coffees and other commodities during the day, are now no longer around.

However, small towns may see an opportunity as top paid executives can work from a wider variety of locations.

This could serve to improve quality of life in these lesser known towns.
