5G Testing Causing Corona? Govt Issues Important Statement On This Allegation

Both the DoT and COAI have denounced the rumors of a link between 5G and the pandemic. They have called the claims false, baseless and unscientific.

There has been false news floating around that 5G towers, trials or networks are behind the deadly second wave of the pandemic currently ravaging India.

The telecom department has stepped in to inform that these are baseless and false claims and has requested the public to not fall for it or circulate it further.

No Harmful Effects On Human Body From Tower Emissions

It has reaffirmed the absence of any link between 5G technology and the pandemic and that the concept has no scientific basis.

5G network testing has also not begun in India, further disproving the claims.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has added that there are no reasons to be concerned about any other negative effects on humans because of the mobile towers.

They stated that non-ionizing Radio frequencies emitted by the towers have very little power and as such cannot harm living cells in the human body.

DoT Norms 10 Times Stricter Than WHO

Besides, DoT follows norms on safe limits that are 10x stricter compared to the WHO (World Health Organization) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) .

The DoT also has a well-structured process in place which all operators have to adhere to.

Govt Portal For Citizens To Request Info, Other Measures

If any citizen has any concerns regarding safe limits of radio wave emissions by towers, they can request EMF measurements/testing on Tarang Sanchar portal at https://tarangsanchar.gov.in/emfportal

The “Tarang Sanchar” portal is an initiative by the DoT to increase public awareness about the health effects of EMF emission from mobile towers.

Other measures to educate the population include conducting public events to spread scientific knowledge, distribution of informational pamphlets and brochures, posting information on the DoT website and newspaper ads.

India Needs Telecom Now More Than Ever

Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) has also joined in putting fears to rest about the 5G and pandemic link rumors.

The Director General stated that the rumors are completely false and has also asked the public to not believe the baseless claims.

He reasoned that several countries are already in the 5G phase and their people are accessing the services safely.

The association emphasised the importance of telecom for India especially in the present times.

The group, which includes Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and VI as members, has said that telecom is benefiting millions by facilitating essential services such as work from home, online classes, e-health and online doctor consultations and not to mention the provision of real-time information.
