Metro Neo Will Cost Just 25% Than Normal Metro System!
The approval will further aid the state governments and urban local bodies to design proposals as per their requirements, according to the officials.
The Metro Neo is for Indian cities with a population of less than 10 lakh or for the outskirts of bigger cities.
The government is approving it as it will be beneficial, especially for the country’s smaller cities, as a cheap and no-frills Metro system, said Durga Shanker Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs as quoted in an IE report.
The Metro Neo systems will be lighter than conventional Metro trains as they will just a 10-tonne axle load rather than the normal 17 tonnes.
Metro Neo system is fitting for areas where the one-way traffic demand is over 8,000 passengers in peak hours, as per the sources quoted in the report.
With similar facilities, the cost of the Metro Neo project is around 25% of the normal Metro system.
Govt’s Plans Regarding Metro and Metro Neo Projects!
For the Metro Neo project, Telangana’s Warangal and Maharashtra’s Nashik are the cities that have been pitched, said the officials.
Nashik’s proposal states a 33-km long stretch with around 30 stations. This proposal is being processed by the Ministry of Urban Affairs. Warangal’s plans are still underway.
Move people instead of moving vehicles is urban mobility’s modern concept. As per the government’s plans, 910 kilometers of Metro projects of various kinds are proposed to be built across India in the next 5 years. This will take the total to around 1,600 kilometers, said Mishra.
