Google Asks Employees To Return To Workplace; High Risk Area Employees May Be Excused

The COVID-19 pandemic breakout forced organizations to send their employees to work from their homes, as a mandatory measure to protect themselves from the dangerous disease.

Among this was Google, but the company wasn’t very keen on letting the employees work from home permanently.

Whereas, many of these organizations also asked their employees to adopt the work from home model permanently.

While Google had initially announced that they will be in favor of asking their employees to work from homes, now the company has said that the employees will need to work from the office. All the employees need to return to the countries where they are employed by the end of the year.

However, the Mountain View, California-based company has said that this option may be open for the people living in high risk areas, as confirmed by sources close to the development.

Ireland Employees Called Back Too, Google CEO Previously Promised WFH Till June 2021?

In Ireland too, many of Google’s employees have been asked to return to the workplace. Much of the staff working at Ireland had left the country during the pandemic but have now “been asked to return by year-end, partly due to tax and legal reasons,” as per Colin Grant, an analyst at Irish securities firm Davy.

In July, Google had permitted its employees to continue working from home until June 2021.

The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai wrote in an email, “To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021, for roles that don’t need to be in the office. I hope this will offer the flexibility you need to balance work with taking care of yourselves and your loved ones over the next 12 months.”

He had also promised that a hybrid model will be made available for employees. But now, Google seems to be backtracking on its words and asking that all the employees return to the country of their employment by the end of the year.
