Lufthansa Cancels All Flights To India From September 30; Cites Rejection By Indian Officials

German Airline Lufthansa has canceled all its planned flights to India that were scheduled to operate between September 30 to October 20 owing to a disagreement between India and Germany about the issue of flights operated under the air bubble between the two countries.

Lufthansa said that the cancellation of the flights is due to the unanticipated rejection by Indian authorities of planned flight schedule for October. The airline also said, “India has so far not accepted the invitation by the German government to discuss details regarding a temporary travel agreement between both countries.” 

A senior Indian official has revealed that the arrangement of the air bubbles during the pandemic allowed nationals of both the countries to travel to and fro was finalised with Germany in July. 

But there are restrictions for Indian nationals who want to travel to Germany which created disadvantage for Indian airlines. there also was in equitable distribution of traffic which was in favour of the Lufthansa airline. 

Lufthansa Operates 20 Flights; Indian Airlines Operate Only 3-4 Per Week

Where Indian airlines operated only three to four flights in a week, Lufthansa operated 20 flights in the same week. This was also confirmed by the DGCA (Director General of Civil Aviation). 

The official revealed that despite this difference, 7 flights a week were offered to be cleared for Lufthansa which hasn’t been accepted by them. He also said that the negotiations between the two countries are underway. 

In a statement, Lufthansa said: “Lufthansa had originally scheduled flights for October in order to continue connecting Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore with Europe and other regions in Lufthansa’s worldwide network. The October schedule would also have seen the addition of flights to and from Chennai.”
