Amazon, Flipkart, Jio Platforms To Display “Country of origin” On Products
Previously we reported that a new e-commerce policy was in the making, where there was a possibility that e-commerce platforms were to display the origin of the product that they were selling on their platform.
This has now been confirmed and revealed to us by some government officials close to the development. About a dozen more online ecommerce platforms, including Facebook Inc.-backed Jio Platforms, Amazon.com Inc. and Walmart Inc.’s Flipkart have come to this decision that the sellers will be required to display the origin of their products.
Apparently, they will start displaying the product’s origin within two weeks.
As per reports, The commerce ministry’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade had gathered the e-commerce platforms together on a video conference and asked them to do the same within just a day’s notice.
India Vs China War Led To Boycotting Chinese Goods
The tension at the LAC between India and China paved the way for an anti-Chinese sentiment to start brooding in India.
Boycotting Chinese goods has now become a priority, which was pretty clear when the Telecom Ministry ordered BSNL, MTNL, and other private companies to not use Chinese equipment under any circumstances.
Additionally, India’s trade with mainland China and Hong Kong declined by over 7% to $109.76 billion in FY20, which is the steepest fall ever recorded.
About 7 crore traders have started protests with the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) leading them, and have stopped selling Chinese goods at their platforms.
If the product origin is displayed on the platform, people will easily be able to opt out of buying the product and China’s sales will be heavily impacted.
