Your Facebook, Whatsapp Will Not Be Linked With Aadhaar: Govt Of India?
Putting rest to all rumours and speculations, Govt of India has informed the nation that social media users will not be asked to link their Aadhaar with their social media accounts.
This means, that your Facebook, Whatsapp and other social media portals will be Aadhaar-free. For now.
Govt: No Linkage Of Aadhaar With Social Media Accounts
While replying to a query in Lok Sabha, Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has made it clear that there will be linkage of Aadhaar with social media accounts.
He said, “There is no such proposal with the government for linking Aadhaar with social media accounts of individuals,”
The Minister assured one and all, that the very structure of Aadhaar is such, that it prohibits front end users to access the system, and there is absolutely no chance of privacy issues such as data thefts, arising from Aadhaar.
He said, “…the system by intent is blind to the purpose for which Aadhaar may be used at the front end by the resident. Also, the core biometrics is encrypted at the time of enrolment/updation. It is never kept unencrypted and is never shared,”
Social Media Linked With Aadhaar: Will It Happen?
In 2017, as an April Fool’s prank, we had created a witty story, stating that Govt has made Aadhaar-linking of all social media portals mandatory.
Although it was a harmless joke, we were stunned to witness it being a reality.
Ever since then, there have appeared multiple reports and suggestions, to mandatory link Aadhaar with social media, which will give Govt. more control, and more power to monitor its citizens. It was assumed that such a step will help to stop ‘trolling’.
States such as Tamil Nadu asked Supreme Court to make it a rule as well.
Even a PIL was filed by a BJP leader, to make it a rule for every social media user to link their Aadhaar.
However, the PIL was rejected.
In fact, as per UIDAI, the nodal agency for maintaining and running Aadhaar, there exists no law under present circumstances, which can empower the Govt. to make such a decision.
Hence, as of now, there is very less chance that social media accounts will be linked with Aadhaar.
We will keep you updated, as more details come in.
