Xiaomi #1 Smartphone Brand in India

Just some days back we brought out a market report to you saying how Xiaomi has secured the 1st place in terms of smartphone purchase in the Indian market, topping Samsung. Well, now Counterpoint Research has published its market report, which clearly shows that Xiaomi shows no backing down and the Chinese smartphone vendor has secured number one in India, in the second quarter (Q2) of 2019, beating Samsung yet again.

Xiaomi Holds 28% Market Share!

Seems like while entering into the Indian market 5 years ago, Xiaomi had made up its mind to disrupt the whole Indian smartphone platform with its budget-friendly and excellent quality phone models.

Xiaomi grabs the top spot in Q2, with a 28% market share. It may surprise you that even though Xiaomi grabs the top spot, its growth more or less remained flat even after the launch of Redmi Note 7 Pro and Redmi 7S. It showed 6% YoY growth, due to its brand expansion and expansion in the offline segment. In the last quarter, market share of Xiaomi was 29% and its shipments had declined by 2% YoY.

India’s Heavy Smartphone Consumption: 37 Million Units Shipments in Q2

Thanks to new smartphone launches almost every month, with the newer model offering better specs than the older one, price cuts on older devices and channel expansion across brands, the smartphone shipments in India has increase to 37 million units, just in Q2.

China’s BBK Group, including brands like Oppo, Vivo, Realme and OnePlus, became the leading smartphone manufacturer in India for the first-time ever. They captured a combined share of 30%.

Samsung, on the other hand saw a 7% YoY decline in its shipments, its market share coming down to 25% in Q2. However, it grew 30% quarter-on-quarter, attributing to sales of refreshed A and M series in India as well as price cut of older J-series.

Speaking of Huawei, its trade ban led to reduction in its shipments YoY but the good news is that it still manages to find a position in the top 10 smartphone brands.

Realme Smoothly Pushing Xiaomi Down the List

Realme is just 2 year old in the Indian smartphone market. Interestingly, whilst Xiaomi showed a rather falt growth in the Q2, Realme extraordinarily showed a strong growth of solid 2%, from 7% to 9% in the same quarter.

In fact, Realme was the fastest brand in India to ever ship 8 million smartphones within one year of its debut. Realme C2 crossed one million mark within a couple of months of launch. This is the third consecutive quarter that Realme has grabbed a spot within the top five brands driven by strong performance of Realme C2 and Realme 3 Pro.

Who is to say if Realme is hogging up the grounds and opportunities of Xiaomi? Both of these are budget-friendly phones and expanding rapidly into the offline segment in India. These two were strong competitors recently when premium flagships Realme X and Xiaomi Redmi K20 series were launched at a gap of just two days.

In India, the pricing sweet-spot for consumers has moved to INR 10,000-20,000 price band and it will remain the biggest contributor in the India smartphone segment this year. Localisation, branding, and innovation will remain the next key drivers for growth in India moving forward, where a majority of shares will be controlled by a few brands leading to more number of exits among the long-tail brands.
