Feel & Build

The new Asus ROG Phone 2 is not exactly a successor. The company hasn’t changed the overall design or brought in some robust changes. Rather it just upgraded a few existing features and added new features that will help with more refined performance. At 240 grams, the smartphone does sound to be heavy, but it’s not.

It sits perfectly on your hand, and offers a two-way gaming experience.

According to the company, they have used a certain length for the design to make it perfect for gaming use. The length for the finger spacing in landscape would be perfect for gaming with improved Air Trigger controls this time.

Seamless Display

Asus ROG Phone 2 comes with a huge 6.59-inch full HD+ display. It offers a screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. It’s an AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate. According to Asus, the Asus ROG Phone 2 is the world’s first 240Hz touch response smartphone. It offers a 1ms response time with 70 percent FPS stability.

It’s a 10-bit HDR panel, so you will be able to play games at the best of resolutions. On top, there’s Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

We used it, and honestly, it does surprise you. While OnePlus 7 Pro had been our favorite till now, the new Asus gaming beast changes the story completely. The display is extremely responsive, and you can only understand the difference when you use it for real.

Power On Steroids

The ROG Phone 2 runs on the latest Qualcomm flagship processor. It’s the world’s first smartphone to run on Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC. It’s an overclocked chip clocked at 2.9GHz. The new super powerful processor pairs with 8GB and 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM. So, technically there’s nothing you can’t run on this smartphone.

ROG Phone 2 offers some super impressive gaming performance.

To be plainly honest, you can experience the difference between the ROG 2 and any other flagship smartphone in the market. The high-performance gaming is key feature backed by the world’s fastest chip, Snapdragon 855 Plus.

On top, you get UFS 3.0 internal storage. The base variant offers 128GB of storage with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage for the 12GB RAM model.

The Software

The smartphone would come with some special features. The company has some gamer-centric software which lets you check different things you would need a gaming smartphone. The software lets you uses the monitor clock speeds, temperature, and adjust the Aura lighting on the back panel.

The software on Asus ROG 2 smartphone lets you configure the AirTriggers, map keys, disable alerts, etc.

Also, the company is offering you an option to choose between a UI. The ROG Phone II runs on ROG UI. For a change, Asus is offering you an option to use ZenUI 6 that are currently launched with Asus 6Z.

Gaming Enhancements

The company has made some slight changes overall. You get back dual front-facing stereo speakers with DTS: X Ultra support. As the company explains, it’s 5 magnet speakers, 2.5x louder than compared to the original first generation Asus ROG Phone. The sound was great, and we faced no issues.

There’s four noise-cancelling microphones surrounding the gaming device.

Talking about the vibrating motor, the company has added improved hardware this time. The ROG 2 will offer 3D vibration effect on top and below for a better gaming experience along the X and Y-axis.

Special Cooling Technology

The company has added a redesigned cooling technology to the smartphone. There’s a new version of the clip-on AeroActive Cooler 2 fan added to the ROG 2 device. According to Asus, the new AeroActive Cooler 2 fan will be able to offer four times quieter and directional air. This will directly hit the vents straight at the back.

We played top games as PUBG and Fornite for extended hours, and there were hardly any heating issues.

The company has claimed that the thermal temperature will remain 5 degrees lower compared to the predecessor. The new fan is located at the side-mounted proprietary connector as the first ROG Phone.

The Mammoth Battery

ROG Phone 2 will come with a mammoth 6,000mAh battery. The smartphone will support Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging. The smartphone will be using two ICs, one in the supplied 30W fast charger and one in the phone.

The charging speeds are okay. The smartphone can charge up to 4,000mAh battery.

So, the device can go for 0 to 66 percent of the total battery capacity in 58 minutes. Out of the box, the smartphone will come with a 3A USB Type-C cable.
