World’s Smallest Computer is here!

Researchers at the University of Michigan have successfully manufactured the smallest computer in the world. It’s much smaller than grain of rice and is around 0.3mm in size. The title of world’s smallest computer which earlier held by IBM, which was 1mm x 1mm in size.

Named as Michigan Micro Mote (or M3), the recently unveiled world’s smallest computer is fully functional in nature. The M3 can retain the programming and data even after losing its power. The previous IBM tinier “computer” was a 1mm x 1mm chip which came with hundreds and thousands of transistors.

World’s Smallest Computer – 10 Unknown Facts

The newer Tiniest Computer in the world has been developed by the engineers at University of Michigan, and here are 10 unknown facts about the world’s smallest computer –

Its Smaller Than A Grain Of Rice

Michigan University researchers have created a computer so small that it can easily fit on the tip of a grain of rice. The new tiniest computer in the world, M3 only measures just 0.33mm on each side, compared to the earlier smallest computer from IBM measured 1mm on each side.

Can Be Used For Audio & Video Surveillance

Michigan Micro Mote or M3 can be used for a number of purposes, and that includes audio and video surveillance. The smallest computer can be used as a part of the audio components of a video surveillance camera, and the M3 will deploy the audio and video input-output.

Comes With Processor, RAM, Transmitters & Receivers

M3 comes with all the required components like processor, RAM, wireless transmitters and receivers. The smallest computer in the world will use each of the component to process out information and data.

Can Retain Data

Even if Michigan Micro Mote goes off power and all the data on the microdevice is gone, it can be retained. The nano-computer system developed by University of Michigan contacts a base station through the light for power and data and retains lost data.

Uses Light To Produce Electricity

The world’s smallest computer is built on photovoltaics. The M3 works on a process which converts the light into electricity, and the nanodevice gains power from it. Michigan Micro Mote also sends and receives its information and data through light.

Will Help The Medical World To Treat Critical Diseases

Michigan Micro Mote, the world’s smallest PC can be used for a number of thing, and will find immense applicability in the medical world. The nanodevice can be used for a number of medical purposes like pressure sensing inside the eye of someone suffering from glaucoma to using it for cancer research.

Can Report Temperatures in Extremely Tiny Regions

The smallest computer in the world can report temperatures in extremely tiny or minuscule regions. The Michigan Micro Mote can sense a temperature in a cluster of cells with an error rate of only just 0.1 degree celsius.

The Device Cannot Store Any Data

The world’s smallest computer cannot store any data on its own and sends all information through signals to its base station which feeds M3 with light for power and programming. You can retain the data after losing power from the base station which receives all data transmissions.

The Computer Depends On Activity Needs

The smallest computer in the world comes with a limited number of features. The functionality of the Michigan Micro Mote will mainly depend on what it is being specifically used and the activity needs related to the nanodevice.

Will Assist in Cancer Treatment

The M3 can act as a temperature sensor double and can assist doctors to monitor and investigate variations of temperature within a tumor compared to the other normal tissues in the body. The computer will help to determine the changes in temperature and will assist in cancer treatment.
