Wallets Banned From Using Aadhaar for KYC

Several interesting updates related with Aadhaar have surfaced in the last few days, which directly and indirectly affects us all.

The most important being that mobile wallets have been banned from accessing the Aadhaar database, due to security reasons.

But hold on. Not all wallets face this ban. Paytm would be able to access Aadhaar database, but Airtel Money won’t!

In a related Aadhaar news, UIDAI has now allowed everyone to download their respective Aadhaar update data. We will soon share how you can do that, with few easy clicks!

UIDAI To Wallets: Sorry, You Can’t Access Aadhaar Database!

The Unique Identification Authority of India had classified entities as local and global authentication user agencies when it came to accessing Aadhaar database.

Now, based on feedback and security audits, it has been found that not all mobile wallets have the required security protocols to protect their database.

This is the reason that 90% of all mobile wallets have been banned from accessing Aadhaar database, and now, they will have to rely on other means and sources to complete KYC of their users.

UIDAI, the nodal authority on Aadhaar has issued a letter last month, which stated:

“Some entities required to verify clients with Aadhaar number may not have the requisite security systems needed to use or store these numbers and have been precluded from the list of global AUAs.”

This means apps like Mobikwik, PhonePe, and others won’t be able to use Aadhaar for KYC.

Sameer Nigam, founder of PhonePe spoke with Bloombergquint, and he said,

“We are stuck. We have millions of people consumer stuck due to sub-optimal experience because they can’t complete the KYC.”

However, Paytm is not banned from accessing the Aadhaar database, as UIDAI is satisfied with their security protocols.

Bipin Preet Singh, the chief executive officer of Mobikwik said,

“This is making the KYC more challenging. We do not agree with the assessment that there is a security issue. We will be working to make sure so that we can do KYC properly.”

Users can use virtual AAdhaar card number to do the authentications for KYC.

This ban would be effective July 1st.
