Xiaomi Redmi S2 May Be Coming To India; It Is A Budget Powerhouse!

Xiaomi’s first Android One device Mi A1 has been recently discontinued, which hints at an imminent launch of a new Xiaomi smartphone in India. Many are suspecting an early arrival of the next generation Mi A2. But a new rumour of a different smartphone has surfaced. The company is also planning to unveil its recently-released Mi MIX 2S in some key global markets.

As per the reports, Xiaomi will be launching a budget smartphone in India called Redmi S2. The smartphone will come with dual cameras and a face unlock feature. The company will add Redmi S2 to its wide mid-range line, but the smartphone may launch in India with a new name or as an all-new series.

The Redmi S2 will be exclusive to China and India only, and the device might launch in India first before heading to its home market in China.

Xiaomi Redmi S2 – Everything We Know So Far

Xda-developers managed to retain the firmware files of Redmi S2, which has revealed that the device will launch in both India and China.

18:9 Widescreen Display

The device will come with an entry-level display with HD resolution. The device will have an 18:9 widescreen LCD display with a screen resolution of 1440×720 pixels, though the size of the actual display is still not known.

Snapdragon 625 Processor

The device will come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, which is the same chip from Mi A1, Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi 5 Plus. Xiaomi has used SD 625 on several of their midrange devices, and it is known for striking a balance between performance and efficiency.

Dual Rear Cameras

Redmi S2 is a budget Xiaomi smartphone but will come with a dual rear camera setup. It will feature a 12MP Sony IMX 486 or 12MP OmniVision OV12A10 primary sensor and a 5MP Samsung S5K5E8 secondary sensor.

Face Unlock

The device will sport a 5MP Samsung S5K5E8 sensor, which will come with support for Face Unlock. The camera will also come with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Portrait Mode with background blurring feature.

Hardware & Storage

As per the specifications, there’s a confirmed 16GB variant of Redmi S2. The device may also come with other storage options such as 32GB and 64GB. The device will also come with a microSD card slot. The smartphone may be available with two RAM options of 2GB and 3GB.

Android Oreo

As per the firmware, the Redmi S2 will run the latest Android Oreo 8.1 out of the box. The device will also come with the latest version of Xiaomi’s own MIUI 9 or higher.

Battery

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 will come with a similar 3,080mAh unit as Mi A1. With Snapdragon 625 on board, it will help the device to perform better at low energy, and the low-resolution display will help to extend the battery further.

Launch Dates

The firmware mentions that the Xiaomi Redmi S2 will launch in India and China. It may launch in India first, and then make its way to its home market China. As is the norm, the Chinese variant will have a different ROM than the Indian variant.

If the Redmi S2 is priced strategically in the mid-range segment, Xiaomi may have another budget winner on their hands. The device will ship with a proven processor, dual cameras and face unlock feature, which may prove to be a USP for Redmi S2 in the budget segment.
