Nokia 8110 4G Will Compete With Jio Phone

Nokia 8110 was launched in 1996, as part of their high end 8000 series phone. It gained popularity in the movie Matrix, where Keanu Reeves used the unique slider, and slips it up to receive the call, and down to disconnect it.

It was fashionable, and trendy, and became a cult. Almost.

Soon, the onslaught of smartphones from Samsung and Apple and other biggies overshadowed the once sleek Nokia 8110.

And now, 21 years later, Nokia 8110 is making a grand comeback globally.

Called as the Banana Phone, due to the unique shape, the price dynamics and the features offered by the new avatar: 8110 4G is pitting it against Jio Phones.

If Nokia 3310, Nokia 6, Nokia 5, and Nokia 3 held centre stage at Mobile World Congress last year, it was Nokia 8110 4G, along with Nokia 8 Sirocco which was the talk of the town.

An interesting fight may ensure, and we present here 3 comparisons between Nokia 8110 and Jio Phone, which makes this a close fight.

Jio Phone Vs Nokia 8110: Specifications

The new, reformed Nokia 8110 has 1.1GHz dual-core Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform coupled with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage; along with 2.4-inch QVGA display.

The storage cannot be expanded.

On the other hand, Jio Phone has 512 MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 128 GB. Hence, in the storage department, Jio Phone has a clear upper hand.

Jio’s 2.4-inch colour display is same as that of 8110, and it has Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 SoC or Spreadtrum chipset, which is almost same as Nokia’s 8110.

While Jio Phone has 2000mAh battery and 2 MP rear camera, the Nokia 8110 has 1500mAh battery and a 2 MP rear camera.

Hence, in the battery department as well, Jio has an upper hand.

Jio Phone Vs Nokia 8110: Content & Services

The compatibility of both Nokia 8110 and Jio Phone is the same, as they both run on KaiOS.

However, while 8110 4G users can get custom-built Google Maps, Facebook, Google search, Twitter apps on this OS, Jio Phone users won’t be able to use Twitter and Maps. A new version of the Facebook app for KaiOS meant for Jio Phones has already been launched.

Rumours are in that a special version of Whatsapp will be soon launched for KaiOS.

On the other hand, the Jio Phone has in-built JioTV, JioCinema, JioMusic etc, which the 8110 doesn’t have.

Hence, in the usage of the apps, Nokia 8110 has a slight upper hand. But considering the demographics which will use JioPhone, this difference will hardly make a dent.

Jio Phone Vs Nokia 8110: Price

Now, the most important aspect: Price.

Jio Phone is effectively priced zero, as they have launched cashback program for their users.

After using the mobile and Jio network for few months, the price of the handset becomes zero.

Whereas, Nokia 8110’s price in India hasn’t been announced yet.

In Europe, it is available for 79 Euros, which is Rs 6350/-. Hopefully, they won’t follow the Nokia 3310 pricing logic: Rs 3310/-!

Nokia’s entry-level smartphone: the Nokia 1, based on Android Oreo (Go Edition) is priced Rs 5,500/-.

Now, market rumours are high that Nokia may partner with a telecom operator to offer their newest 8110 4G as a bundled handset, which will surely reduce the price to a greater extent.

But, can they make it free, just like Jio?
