Time 100 Most Influential People in the World

This year’s Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World list is special for India; and the reason is that both Bollywood and Business have sent their representatives into this highly coveted list.

Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, founders of Flipkart have been included in this list for the first time, thereby signifying the weight and leverage of Indian Internet business. Interestingly, they both were described as arrogant by their investors during the initial stages of forming Flipkart (2007), as they had declared that within 10 years, Flipkart would be worth $100 million.

In less than a decade, Flipkart has 75 million customers, and valuation of $13 billion.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai is the other business head featured in the list, and the inclusion of both Sachin/Binny Bansal along with Google CEO signifies that Times and the Western world is now in awe of Indian business entities as well as CEOs who are managing world’s biggest tech companies.

Priyanka Chopra, daughter of an Army personnel and Miss World 2000 has made the entire Bollywood industry proud by being included in this coveted list.

Priyanka had recently received Padma Shri Award as well, which is India’s 4th highest civilian award. In 2010, she was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights in 2010.

After she was included in the case of TV series Quantico, she became Asia’s first actress to get a role in an American prime time TV series. She has recently bagged a role in movie Baywatch as well, thereby cementing her place in the Hollywood.

Besides Business and Bollywood, Time Magazine has recognized the contributions of RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan as well, as he has been featured in the coveted list. Times Magazine has described him as “India’s prescient banker,” among a rare hybrid of “economic seers” who “steered” India through the global recession and turbulence, and “playing a large role in making it one of the emerging-market stars of the moment.”

Sania Mirza, who received Padma Bhushan award last month, is also representing India in Times Magazine’s’ most influential list. Sachin Tendulkar wrote about her “confidence, strength and resilience reach beyond tennis”; and hailed her as an inspiration for all Indians.

Last year, politics was the focus as PM Modi along with Arvind Kejriwal were featured in the list.
