3G on Mobile promises to bring about a sea-change in how we use data on our mobile phones. The higher speeds of 3G will allow consumers to do things that would not have been possible with existing GPRS / Edge internet services.

3g internet speeds will make it possible for consumers to access live streaming multimedia content through the internet. And it is not just mobile, but also portable devices like iPad & other 3G enabled tablets, which will make it possible for consumers to access multimedia content on the go.

Bollywood on mobile 3G

Bollywood Production houses are seeing this as their next big opportunity – literally every movie production house has huge plans for their content offering on mobile. The biggest advantage for them is they have piles of content which can be readily offered to consumers.

Once, the initial revenue collections at the time of movie release are over, production houses are looking to tap different channels to make additional revenue. 3G internet allows them to offer content to millions on consumers and in turn make revenue through either advertising or subscription based model.

Just to give you a few examples – Shemaroo Entertainment has already launched shortened blockbusters such as Sholay, Golmaal and Chupke Chupke of about 15 minutes for mobile users. UTV has started with audio cinema which enables users to hear movies such as Kaminey, Rajneeti and Sholay.

Although, mobile users can experience this content currently, it is at a very low quality – With 3G speeds, they can view video clips close to normal frame rate of 30 FPS quality. Infact, UTV has gone ahead and announced their plans to produce & release short “Made for Mobile” movies.

Bollywood content is probably the most sought after content on mobile phones in India and with 3G services launching by the end of this year, bollywood content offering on Mobiles is sure to see multi-fold growth.

Bollywood Production houses are sure to cash in on this opportunity!
