Top B-schools in India for 2009

by Arun Prabhudesai on October 8, 2009 |

One of the popular post on this blog has been the The top 25 Business Schools in India, which I had published back in 2007. As the list has been outdated now, I thought it would be a good time to publish the Top B-School & Professional Colleges in India for 2009.

Unlike the previous list which was released by Outlook, this is a more comprehensive list released by Research organization C fore (Centre for Forecasting & Research). The list is based on 163 B-schools that participated in the survey.

Interesting aspect about this survey is that the data is based primarily on objective data. The survey is also transparent as participants have access to the data of their competitors after the findings are published.

The survey ranks two year full time programmes offered by B-schools in India based on following parameters:

  1. Intellectual capital
  2. Placement performance
  3. Infrastructure and facilities
  4. Industry interface.
  5. International Linkages

These parameters were further divided to obtain granular scores for rankings. You can check out the complete methodology and details here.

It is interesting to see that with the downturn looming large many of the Business Schools were not able to achieve 100% placements and the average salaries compared to previous years dropped by more than 30%.

The downturn took a toll on the Business Schools itself.

  • In 88% of the B-schools surveyed, not a single faculty member was sent to participate in an international conference.
  • In 68% of the schools, the faculty development expenditure did not exceed 10 lakh rupees.
  • In 91% of the schools surveyed, not a single paper has been published in any international journal by their permanent faculty in the last academic year.

This survey ranks 2 year programmes. ISB Hyderabad offers 1 year program. I also heard that they do not provide their placement and other numbers to these kind of surveys.

{In 91% of the schools surveyed, not a single paper has been published in any international journal by their permanent faculty in the last academic year.}

I guess this has nothing to do with the downturn. Moreover this shows the quality of education in our B-Schools. Not only B-Schools if you do a research you will find that not many papers are being published by IIT faculty either. Higher education is in shambles in India.

Hi

This list needs some big time editing. For the fact IIM Bangalore did not even make it to the list is astonishing.Constantly ranked No.2 IIM B should definitely be well placed in Top 10 atleast. The survey should talk about B-Schools and not the No. of years the course is for hence ISB has to make it to the top of the list. Some not so great institutes have made it to the list. Also Capitation should be also taken into account and marks should be deducted based on it.What is a survey without penetrating the roots and getting proper information about the institutes.

@ Himanshu
Im an Alumni of IIPM and I can tell you that it’s definitely not bad but yes it is expensive. Regarding the placements there were many of the top companies that came on campus for hiring and u can get a job in a good co with a decent package from IIPM if you make the best use of the facilities available there. My experience there has been good and it was worth studying there. If u want more details you can mail me.

I suspect on the validity of this survey.

Its really surprising..

Some colleges that show 100% placement and actually dont have 100% placement.

Its really funny.

First of all, I am happy that my alma mater is in rank 2…
But this study should have taken IIM-B and IIM-C into consideration too…
Although am an XLRI grad, personally I would rate them slightly better.

Also after that should come IIM-L, FMS, MDI, IIM-I, IIM-K, SP Jain, Nitie, Jamnalal Bajaj…n so on..in order…

problem of these rankings is that the surveys methodologies and samples addressed are questionable…

Well, what about Symbiosis Group of Institutes, Pune? A couple of them – SIBM, SCMHRD are definitely better than a host of colleges mentioned in the list here! Pune University – PUMBA, a low profile but fundamentally good institution also doesn’t find a mention in the rankings
