HCL’s founder Shiv Nadar is now ‘India’s Most Generous’ with an yearly donation of Rs 1,161 crore as per the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022.

He had placed second after Wipro’s Azim Premji last year and now has reclaimed the top spot with a daily donation of Rs 3 crore per day.

Premji is now at the second spot this year with an annual donation of Rs 484 crore.

What Nadar donates for 

Nadar is interested in education when it comes to philanthropic initiatives.

His Shiv Nadar Foundation includes initiatives like the SSN Institutions, VidyaGyan, Shiv Nadar University, Shiv Nadar School, Shiksha Initiative, and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art.

As for Azim Premji, his two philanthropic initiatives have been made partners in the three companies that have 56 per cent stake in Wipro.

This is the 9th annual ranking of the most people who have donated significantly in India, featuring the likes of Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, Kumar Mangalam Birla and Zerodha founders Nikhil and Nithin Kamath and others.

Women rankings

Among the women, Rohini Nilekani claims the top spot in the women’s category, with a donation of Rs 120 crore.

Leena Gandhi Tewari and Anu Aga donated Rs 21 crore and Rs 20 crore respectively.

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani retains the third spot with a donation of Rs 411 crore.

Significant impact during pandemic

His company’s charity, the Reliance Foundation prioritizes education and healthcare.

The most significant contribution was made during Covid’s second wave by producing 1,000 tonnes of oxygen every day.

This was given for free to states for over one lakh students.

Kumar Mangalam Birla trails Ambani with a donation of Rs 242 crore on healthcare, education, sustainable livelihood, infrastructure and social reform initiatives.

Per the list, education remained the most favored cause followed by healthcare and arts, culture and heritage.

The list noted that contributions fell in the financial year 2022 due to the ‘huge base effect’ of pandemic spending.
