The Latest Incident

Pure EV’s EPluto 7G electric scooter went ablaze in Patan, Gujarat, while it was plugged for charging outside a house

There were no casualties.

This is the fifth incident of fire related to Pure Energy’s electric scooters.

However, there is no known cause this time.

The Last Incident

The last time a scooter from the company ignited was last month in Hyderabad.

In this particular case, the e-scooter suddenly stopped while the owner was travelling with his friend.

When he opened the battery compartment, smoke started coming out and then the vehicle caught fire.

Company, Not Battery Maker, Responsible

Pure EV recalled 2,000 electric scooters in April this year for its ETrance+ and EPluto 7G e-scooters.

The latter being the same model which was involved in Hyderabad and Gujarat.

Since the company doesn’t source battery packs from anywhere else, it is accountable for the incidents.

Last month, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) released its report after being asked by the central government to investigate these incidents.

Battery Defect Due To Poor Quality

As per the report, they found serious defects in the batteries.

Also to blame are bad battery design and serious defects in the EV modules.

These defects occur when the manufacturers source low-grade materials to save costs.

The government has summoned several EV manufacturers to explain this practice.

It is expected to issue new quality-centric guidelines for EVs to ensure better quality of engineering in the production of the vehicles.

Tough Consequences

The Union Ministry will hear them out before taking a decision.

If any company is found negligent in their processes, a heavy penalty will be imposed and a recall of all defective vehicles will also be ordered.

So far, Ola Electric has recalled over 1,400 electric scooters, Pure EV has recalled 2,000 units of its ETrance+ and EPluto 7G scooters, while Okinawa Autotech has recalled 3,215 scooters.
