Delhi IIT Student Beats 1 Lakh+ Coders From 87 Nations; Declared World’s Best Coder, Wins $10,000 Prize!

An IIT Delhi student has won the TCS CodeVita, a computer programming competition that over 1 lakh students across 87 countries have participated in.

Intense Competition

Majority of the participants were Indian, with the rest coming from Singapore, China, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Chile and Russia.

CodeVita holds the Guinness World Record title of being the world’s largest computer programming competition.

This year, the tenth season of the competition, had one of the most competitive finales in the contest’s history.

The Winners

Kalash Gupta emerged as the winner and will be awarded a grand prize of $10,000.

Mauricio Andres Cari Leal, from Chile, won $7,000 as the first runner up, while Jeffrey Ho of Taiwan was awarded $3,000.

The third runner-up, who belongs to the Czech Republic, was recognised by the TCS and was awarded a cash prize of $1000.

TCS acknowledged that the four finalists solved all 10 problems, something which is unprecedented.

Gupta’s Experience

Gupta was felicitated by IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee.

He said that it was a “very humbling experience” and that his confidence steadily grew as he made progress in solving problems..

He had also secured third rank in the 2018 Joint Entrance Exam for admission to IITs and was the Delhi zone topper.

Along with the prize money, all the 4 winners have also earned an internship opportunity with TCS’ Research & Innovation organization.

Top Indian Coders

Meanwhile, the names of 21 Indian students from different universities are featured in the list of the world’s top coders.

One of them is 20-year-old Dipanshu Pandey, a third-year student of computer science at Doon-based Graphic Era University who clinched the 11th rank worldwide.

They have also been called by TCS for an interview, and the four finalists will get an opportunity to solve all the 10 challenging coding problems.
