The government has notified Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021. The government has banned plastic products from Jul 1, 2022.

Commodities That Shall Be Prohibited 

The manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of the following single-use plastic, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene commodities shall be prohibited with effect from July 1, 2022

Products like include earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, thermocol for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straws, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns, and stirrers are prohibited strictly

The Thickness Of Plastic Carry Bags

According to a notification dated August 12, the thickness of plastic carry bags will be increased from 50 microns to 75 millimetres on September 30, 2021, and to 120 microns on December 31, 2022. It also suggested that the plastic carry bags would be able to be reused as a result of this.

With effect from September 30, 2021, non-woven plastic carry bags must not be less than 60 gramme per square metre (GSM).

Plastic Waste Management Rules

According to the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, the plastic packaging waste that is not covered by the phase-out of identified single-use plastic items must be collected and managed in an environmentally sustainable manner through the Extended Producer Responsibility of the Producer, Importer, and Brand Owner (PIBO).

For effective implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility, the Guidelines for Extended Producer Responsibility being brought out have been given legal force through Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021.
