Indian Govt Built Record 37 Kms Of 4/6 Lane Highway Per Day In Last 365 Days! 70% Of India’s Highways Will Be 4-Lane

Covid- 19 brought the wheels of the world economy to a standstill. But it seems that it failed to slow down the growth of the veins of India. We are talking about roads in India here. Recently Minister for Road Transport & Highways in the Government of India, Mr. Nitin Gadkari was asked about the status of road building in the nation. And the numbers he gave in the response are rather impressive.

India built about 37 km roads per day in 2020-21

On Thursday, the parliament was informed that in the year 2020-21 the country built 13,327 k of National Highways in 2021. That sums up to about 37 km per day!

In a response to a separate question the minister answers that out of total built national highways, about 37,058 km National Highways have 4/6 lane infrastructure.

Even though last year the ministry has crossed the milestone of 13,000 kilometers, the ministry informed that in the year 2021-22, the target is of building 12,000 kilometers of the road only.

The ministry also informed in a written answer that, to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic effect, his ministry took initiatives under Atmanirbhar Bharat and provided several COVID-19 relief measures to contractors, concessionaires, and consultants, including an extension of time for 3-9 months.

Taking strides for completing Bharatmala Pariyojana

Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase–I includes the development of about 24,800 km National Highway network. Through this various tasks are being undertaken such as connecting Economic corridors, Inter-corridor & feeder roads, National Corridors Efficiency Improvements, Border and International Connectivity roads, Coastal and Port Connectivity roads, Expressways as well as 10,000 km of roads under balance NHDP.

The minister informed that Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had approved the proposal for investment approval for Phase-I of “Bharatmala Pariyojana” on October 24, 2017, for an amount of Rs 5,35,000 crores. “Once Bharatmala Pariyojana is implemented, it is envisaged that the National Highway network of length 70,000+ km (50 percent of National Highway Network) will have a consistent 4-lane and above infrastructure,” he noted while stating the importance of the endeavor.
