Amid the ongoing second wave of coronavirus in the country, it has reported that the antiviral drug Remdesivir for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is being sold on e-commerce websites and black market at exorbitant prices.

An advertisement of a similar sort has been spotted on OLX, where the drug is being sold at prices as high as Rs 6,000. This comes at a time when hospitals are running low on the antiviral drug.

Consequently, in a huge relief for multitudes of coronavirus patients, the government has intervened into the situation, leading to various pharmaceutical companies voluntarily slashing the prices of their respective brands of remdesivir injection (100 mg/vial).

Many of these companies have cut down the prices of their drug by almost 50%.

Maharashtra added 67,123 fresh Covid cases on Saturday, the highest ever daily tally so far.

Pharma Cos Slash Prices of Remdisvir Jab

Remdesivir injection is used to treat Covid-19 infected patients, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus in hospitalized adults and children 12 years of age and older who weigh at least 88 pounds (40 kg). Remdesivir is in a class of medications called antivirals. It works by stopping the virus from spreading in the body.

Drug companies like Cadila Healthcare, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and Cipla have cut down the prices of their respective brands of the remdesivir injection (100 mg/vial) by significant amounts, after the government intervened on the pricings.

The Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Mansukh L Mandaviya tweeted, “Due to the government’s intervention, the price of #Remdesivir Injection is now reduced! I am thankful to pharmaceutical companies for joining hands with the Government to fight against COVID-19 pandemic.”
