Due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, strict regulations have been applied like night curfew and complete lockdown as a result of which many of migrant workers are moving back to their respective states and in the light of same event 14 summer special trains to UP, Bihar and Assam have been announced by the Western Railways.
In order to accommodate the rush, extra coaches are also being added to the existing trains said Sumit Thakur, chief public relations officer (CPRO) of Western Railways in a statement.
Additional Trains, Additional Coaches To Accommodate the Rush
According to Alok Kansal, GM, Western Railways, currently 266 long distance trains from Gujarat and Maharashtra are running as opposed to the total 310 which operated before the pandemic period. Also, 30 pairs of festival special trains were introduced in January 2021 which have now been extended upto June 2021. 14 summer special trains for destinations like Patna and Bhagalpur in Bihar, Gorakhpur and Ghazipur in UP and Guwahati in Assam shall be introduced in upcoming days.
Thakur said that WR temporarily augmented more than 575 coaches in 42 trains to clear the extra rush. In addition to adding additional coaches, waiting list is also closely monitored by WR.A total of 20 special trains to UP, Bihar and Odisha are available from Ahmedabad and Gandhidham railway stations in Gujarat as migrant workers in Surat and Ahmedabad are planning to go back to their home states sue to the surge in Covid-19 cases.
A decision to cancel issuing platform tickets at all railway stations in Gujarat and Maharashtra till April 30 has also been taken by WR.
Only confirmed passengers are being allowed to enter the platform premises and intense ticket checking is done to curb unauthorised passengers. A fine collection of Rs. 2.75 crore in the month of March is a reflection of the gravity of situation and implementation of the same.
