FIR Against Netflix Officials For Objectiobable Scenes
In the BBC drama series: A Suitable Boy, which is being streamed on Netflix, there are some intimate scenes being shows, shot inside a religious place.
Objecting to these scenes, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) national secretary Gaurav Tiwari has filed an FIR against Monika Shergill, Vice President, Content (Netflix) and Ambika Khurana, Director, Public Policies (Netflix).
This was confirmed by Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra. The FIR has been lodged in Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh.
In a statement, Minister Narottam Mishra said, “I had asked officials to examine the series ‘A Suitable Boy’ being streamed on Netflix to check if kissing scenes in it were filmed in a temple and if it hurt religious sentiments. The examination prima facie found that these scenes are hurting the sentiments of a particular religion,”
His demands include the removal of those objectionable scenes and issuing an apology.
The FIR was lodged under Section 295 (A) (malicious acts to outrage and insulting the religious feelings and beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
How Will Police Take Action Now?
Since an FIR has been lodged, police in Rewa district are compelled by law to take action.
But how will they proceed now, that’s the biggest question.
Although all OTTs like Netflix and Amazon Prime are now regulated by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting effective November 11th, 2020, there exists no law to regulate the digital content being streamed online.
Representatives from the Govt has repeatedly refused to censor any content which is being streamed online, but they are concerned about the uncensored content.
Reports had come in that Govt is not happy with the self-regulation code being adopted by all OTT players. But when it comes to religious issues, there can be some censorship against Netflix and other OTTs.
This is a developing story, and we will keep you updated, as more details come in.
