Karnataka Govt Forces Private Firms To Hire Only Locals For These Jobs; Is This Fair?
The Karnataka government has announced that in a soon to come directive, only Kannadigas will be allowed to apply for jobs under ground C and D.
The State government has also asked all the industries and sectors, with government or private bodies, to give preference to Kannadigas in jobs under category A&B, along with skill based posts.

The New Directive
The soon to be issued directive by the Karnataka state government is all set to push employment on priority basis to local youth of the state.
It has announced that all the industries in different sectors across the state will only be allowed to recruit Kannadigas for group C&D jobs.
These jobs-holders include mechanics, clerks, accountants, supervisors, peons, helpers and other office staff.
The state government has also mentioned in its directive that a preference will be given to Kannadigas for job positions in group A&B category and skill based posts.
This comprises of all management-level positions.
What Led to This Priority?
Basavaraj Horatti, the Member of Legislative Council of JD(S) on Wednesday, raised an issue in the parliament raised the issue that many states were making new laws to promote employment for local youths and asked the government to do the same for Karnataka as well.
In December 2019, the Karnataka government revised the Karnataka Industrial Employment Rules, 1961, directing the private companies in the state to prioritize Kannadigas for job positions.
Kannadigas are citizens living in Karnataka for at least 15 years and who can read, write, speak and understand Kannada.
The revised norm also states that shall the companies (government or private) fail to prioritize the said citizens, the state holds the power to intervene.
