8 Lakh Indians Can Be Forced To Leave Kuwait – This Is How ‘Quota-Based’ Immigration Will Work Now
The Gulf country Kuwait has approved a draft expat quota bill, as per which it is looking forward to reducing the number of foreign nationals in the country.
Kuwait’s National Assembly has claimed this expat bill to be constitutional.
If things are finalized, then according to the bill, around 8 lakh Indians may be forced to leave Kuwait.
Indian Population Shouldn’t Exceed 15%
According to the committee, the draft bill says that no more than 15% of the population should be Indians.
This is a big news because Indian community contributes 1.45 million to the total population of Kuwait. Thus, 800,000 Indians will have to leave Kuwait, to make the Indian communit share upto 15% of population in the Gulf country.
According to the Indian embassy in Kuwait, about 28,000 Indians working for the Kuwaiti Government in various jobs like nurses, engineers in national oil companies and a few as scientists.
While about 5.23 lakh Indians are employed in private sectors.
Along with these numbers, about 1.16 lakh Indians are dependents, constituting of 60,000 Indian students studying in 23 Indian schools across Kuwait.
Why Has Kuwait Passed the Draft Expat Quota Bill?
Kuwait experiences a hazardous population imbalance. This means its population structure contains 70% expats population.
Along with this, about 1.3 million of the 3.35 million expats are either illiterate or can merely read and write.
Kuwait government says that they do not require such people in the country.
The current total population of the country is 4.3 million. Of this, Kuwaitis making up 1.3 million, while expats account for 3 million.

Last month, Kuwait’s Prime minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah proposed reducing the number of expats from 70% to 30%.
What Next? What can be Expected as of Now?
Marzouq Al-Ghanem, Assembly Speaker stated that a group of lawmakers and him will submit this draft to the Assembly for a comprehensive study.
The main aim will be to reduce the population of expats in the country.
The bill will be transferred to respective committee so that a comprehensive plan is created.
In fact, India is not the only country Kuwait has proposed this draft bill for. It has done the same for other countries too.
